About Us

Monica

Monica was born in Patna-Bihar in 1971.She has been developing and transitioning in life adjusting to often changing environments…travelling to Gandhi Nagar, Bahadur-garh, Delhi…stepping in adjusting and assimilating various culture.

Because of being on the constant move…being uprooted often from family friends and schools toughened her up as a person. The struggles in life developed in her the quality of prudence; logical thinking and responsibility. She didn’t know these would be useful for her later in life while choosing a career in pottery-ceramics.

Monica having studied home-science probably helped her in creating recepies like pot-ters have to do for their glazes. Checking the texture, porosity, roughness, smoothness  or gloss are the attitudes she has developed and inculcated over so many years of rigor-ous research, testing recording and documenting. When she began doing pottery, it wasrobust and simple. Her glazes were dark, dull and heavy, her brushwork designs were elementary. Monica was always a wheel’s person and her focus has marginally deflected.

Monica learned her fundamentals with Lekha Bhagat, P.R.Daroz, Dipalee Daroz and later Rachna Parasher and several other foreign potters who conducted short term ce-ramic-related courses in India.

On her own she developed crystalline glazes in a gas kiln. It helped her to express more freely…revealing an inherent mystery and beauty of mineral-crystalline nature…her forms developed as the clay stretched between her hands and grew into organic shapes and forms…closing at the top with quirky endings…and the crystals in size and of different shapes. The growth rings manifested in the amorphous matrix.

Nebulae, galaxies, textures and elements of universe became visible in such lucid and tangible forms…

Her bowls mugs and glasses that were robust transformed into fragile ,jagged and sharp quality characteristic of clay-ceramic medium They have come alive again! Her bottles have grown in complexity and design

Monica was awarded “potter of the year award “by A.I.F.A.C.s in 2009 and she was shortlisted for excellence in ceramics competition .She has participated in several notional level shows and potter’s market,…was supplying to fab india with terracotta lamps and unique mugs.Monica has been teaching adults and guiding children in glazing,..organizing and executing-curating their annual shows along with Ambar.

Pottery for her is devotion, a phenoma for love care and attention which is deeply satisfying and nurturing. Clay for her is a medium of expression and an opportunity to create.

Monica has attended workshops with John Stroomer, Marcio Mattos, Tim Andrews…which has exposed her to myriad techniques of firing, glazing and clay-structure… evolving and enhancing her artistic expression and style. Her growth series in terracotta clay display a distinctive character and design.
